Game key sellers

What game key sellers are

Game key sellers are websites where you buy activation keys (or gift links) for PC games, DLC, and software. You enter the key on a platform like Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, or a publisher's launcher, and the game is added to your library permanently.

Key sellers fall into two categories: authorized resellers and grey market sellers. The distinction matters for both pricing and risk.

Authorized resellers

Authorized resellers have a direct relationship with game publishers or distributors. They receive keys through official channels and are permitted to sell them. Examples include Humble Bundle, Fanatical, and Green Man Gaming.

Prices on authorized resellers are competitive because publishers set regional pricing and offer wholesale discounts. Keys purchased from authorized resellers carry virtually no risk of revocation. The publisher knows where every key came from.

Grey market sellers

Grey market sellers operate as open marketplaces where anyone can list keys for sale. The platform connects buyers with third-party sellers - individuals or businesses who obtained keys through various means.

Keys on the grey market can come from:

  • Regional price differences: A seller buys keys cheaply in a lower-priced region and resells them at a markup (but still below the buyer's regional price).
  • Bundle leftovers: Keys from Humble Bundle or similar services, resold individually.
  • Promotional keys: Press copies, review keys, or giveaway keys that were meant to be free.
  • Fraudulent purchases: Keys bought with stolen credit cards or compromised accounts. This is the problematic source.

Risk: revoked keys

When a publisher discovers that keys were purchased fraudulently, they can revoke those keys. The game disappears from your library with no refund from the publisher. You're left to dispute the purchase with the key seller.

This doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Major revocation events have affected thousands of buyers at once. Grey market platforms typically offer buyer protection programs (for an extra fee) that guarantee a replacement key or refund if yours is revoked.

How to check legitimacy

Check the authorized reseller list: Many publishers maintain a list of authorized key sellers. The "IsThereAnyDeal" database tracks authorized stores.

Seller ratings: Grey market platforms show individual seller ratings, number of sales, and account age. Sellers with limited history or recent negative reviews carry higher risk.

Price comparison: Small discounts from regional pricing are normal. Dramatically lower prices - such as a new AAA game at 70% off on launch day - may indicate keys sourced through fraud.

Buyer protection: Grey market platforms typically offer protection programs for an additional fee, covering invalid or revoked keys.

Platform verification

Activating a key immediately after purchase creates a clearer timeline for any potential dispute. If a key fails to activate, the error message and timestamp are the primary evidence in a dispute case.
